History Voices is a digital serious game for history, religion, politics and philosophy. The distinctive multi-perspective approach is achieved through the reflection of the content. The result was the serious game "History Voices", which’s basic stories, are based on the curricula of the German federal states. The use of storytelling breaks down complex topics makes them less complicated and easier to understand. By telling a story from multiple perspectives the content and the messages of the story are presented vividly and playfully. Therefore a different cognitive approach is allowed.

"History Voices" is a digital game which, with its lovingly designed characters, provides students with an easy access to the everyday life. The lessons can be adapted flexibly to one’s teaching and teaching rhythms. The interdisciplinary approach allows teachers, teaching the subjects history, religion, politics, and philosophy, to discuss different aspects of the same story with the students.

The administration mode:

- Works like an interactive book, providing high flexibility in the classroom.

- The teachers select the scenes that they want to address in class.  

- History Voices adapts to your teaching rhythms.

- The glossary is filled as if the students had played through the game.

The player mode:

- Let the students go on a discovery tour themselves.

- After the students have created an account, they are ready to go.

- The dialogues with the other characters let the students collect important facts. The facts are collected in the glossary.

- Because the game is played offline it offers the highest levels of data privacy.

The glossary:

- Stores all important knowledge facts within the modules.

- It sorts the concepts according to the metatheses (humanism, freedom of belief, secularization, reason, and separation of power)

- The glossary is the link between story and analysis level. The discovered terms will be accessible through the glossary during the whole gameplay.

- The terms found are then transformed into a quiz in the analysis level.

The didactic concept

The didactic concept is based on the holistic reflection of the German federal states curricula of history, religion and politics and is reflected with a philosophical approach. The learning system provides three levels. In the first level (basic historic stories), the students will learn the "world of the past" and will be confronted with historical facts. The analysis level (Temple of Knowledge) is the central point of reflection within the learning system. The reflection itself is directed towards humanism and enlightenment. The students encounter the spirit of humanity before and after the "historical adventure." The Spirit explains it’s "BEING" to the student and asks them for help in freeing it from the chains. The chains symbolize the opposite of humanism and enlightenment.

There is a lot to discover in the temple, as each gate represents another world and episode of "History Voices". Students will recognize that their own knowledge of the past and the distinction of "good" and "bad" deeds can free the ghost of its chains. When the students are ready, they can enter the first world. The adventure begins! Complex contents are simplified and presented in a straightforward way through the instrument of storytelling. Thus, by telling a multi-perspective story, contents and messages are presented vividly and playfully, which gives a different cognitive approach. "History Voices" as a digital game, with lovingly designed characters, offers the students an access close to everyday life. Through the multidisciplinary approach, teachers of the subjects history, religion, politics, and philosophy, can discuss other aspects with students. Our goal is achieved when your students ask more questions about the past than necessary! Nothing animates the lesson more than dialogue between students and teachers! Enough content for several weeks of teaching is included in the Serious Game!

Summary story:

We are writing the year 594 BC. Tramos (player character), the son of the aristocrat Prodokulus, has a problem. His best friend Heloss has been arrested for an act he did not commit. Heloss is a debt slave and was only arrested bades on what he is. But there is a solution. Today the new Archons are elected in the Polis Athens. Solon, the Wise wants to abolish debt slavery. He has long realized that the small peasants are not responsible for their poor life and their debts. There is not enough land in the barren, hilly landscape of Attica. The election of Solon, as head of state, is Heloss' only chance! But, there are two problems! The rules of the Polis Athens state that the nine archons may only be elected for one year and a repetition of a term is not allowed. The reigning Archon Solon wants to try anyway, as the social unrests in the Polis increase. His reformations could pacify the Polis again. But in order to follow through with his reformations he needs an aristocratic majority to be reelected. Thus Heloss would have the chance to gain the status of a citizen and Tramos could, as an aristocrat's son, publicly confess his friendship with Heloss. Ironically, Tramos father is one of Solon's strongest opponents and has many votes of the Athenian aristocracy on his side. Can Tramos help Solon be re-elected?


Technical requirements:

Infrastructure:

  - For PC & Mac (Windows, IOS- from October)  

  - One-time download, after acquiring the license for your school. A setup file will be generated after purchase and can be stored for example in a cloud.

  - The game is played offline. You don`t need Wifi.

 - Therefore, the students must have a permanent workstation, laptop or PC assigned, so that their game score can be saved.

 - The student’s game score is saved.

Learn curricula knowledge:
  -  A module journey with an avatar = approx. 20 min.

  -  The reflection = about 15 min.

  -  The quiz to release the chains: approx. 10 min.

The Quiz

- The glossary that is filled by the journey through the past, will transformed into a quiz in the temple, so that the ghost can be freed from its           chains. This creates an immanent question and task during the game.

 - The more secondary knowledge is acquired, the more questions and possibilities for reflection arise in the "temple of knowledge".

Connect different subjects:

- History, religion and politics motivate each other. The multi-perspective approach allows each teachers of each subject to illuminate the basics of history  from different perspectives.

- The Serious Game has enough content for several weeks.  

- You could, for example, rehearse an act based on one of the scenes from game. Or let your students discuss who the story could continue and point out    the true historic developments afterwards.
